How do I add a book?
Tap the + button in the Library tab. You can search by title or author, or tap the barcode icon to scan the ISBN on the back of a physical book. Once you find your book, tap it to confirm — the cover, author, and page count fill in automatically.
How do I track a reading session?
Open a book from your library and tap Start Reading. Nightstand runs a timer in the background — you don't need to keep the app open. When you stop reading, tap Stop (or use the notification in your tray).
After stopping, you can edit the session time or pages read if needed.
How do I track audiobooks?
When adding or editing a book, set the format to Audiobook. The session timer will then track minutes and hours instead of pages. It works exactly the same way — tap Start, tap Stop.
Can I use Nightstand without an account?
You can browse the app, but you'll need an account to save books and reading sessions. Creating an account is free and takes about 30 seconds. You can sign up with email, Google, or Apple.
Importing from Goodreads
How do I import my Goodreads library?
First, export your data from Goodreads:
- Go to goodreads.com on desktop
- Click My Books → Import and Export
- Click Export Library — you'll get a CSV file
Then in Nightstand:
- Go to Profile → Settings
- Tap Import from Goodreads
- Select the CSV file you downloaded
Your entire reading history, ratings, and shelves will import in seconds.
Will my ratings and shelves import too?
Yes — ratings, read/currently-reading/want-to-read status, and date finished all import from the Goodreads CSV. Custom shelf names may not map perfectly but your books will all be there.
Subscriptions & Billing
What's included in the free tier?
The free tier lets you add up to 5 books and includes all core features: session timer, stats dashboard, reading streaks, calendar heatmap, and badges. You can use Nightstand forever for free at this level.
What does Premium add?
Nightstand Premium removes the 5-book limit and gives you:
- Unlimited books in your library
- Goodreads import
- Full reading history across all time
All features (stats, streaks, timer, badges) are available on both free and Premium.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple or Google, not by Nightstand directly. To cancel:
On iPhone/iPad: Settings app → [Your name] → Subscriptions → Nightstand → Cancel
On Android: Google Play app → Menu → Subscriptions → Nightstand → Cancel
Your Premium access continues until the end of the current billing period.
How do I restore purchases after reinstalling?
Go to Profile → Settings and tap Restore Purchases. Your Premium subscription will be restored automatically as long as you're signed in with the same Apple ID or Google account.
I was charged but Premium isn't showing. What do I do?
Try tapping Restore Purchases in Profile → Settings. If that doesn't work, email us at support@nightstandapp.com with your account email and we'll sort it out quickly.
Data & Account
How do I delete my account?
You can permanently delete your account from within the app:
- Open Nightstand → tap the Profile tab
- Scroll down to Settings
- Tap Delete Account
- Read the warning, then type DELETE to confirm
This permanently removes all your books, reading sessions, stats, and account data. This cannot be undone.
Can I export my reading data?
Yes — go to Profile → Settings → Export Data. You'll get a JSON file with your complete reading history that you can keep for your records.
My reading streak disappeared. What happened?
A streak requires at least one logged reading session per day. If you missed a day (midnight to midnight in your local timezone), the streak resets. The app uses your device's timezone for streak calculations.
If you believe your streak disappeared due to a bug, email us with your account email and the approximate date — we'll look into it.
My data isn't syncing across devices. Help!
Make sure you're signed in to the same account on both devices. Then try:
- Pull down to refresh on the Library screen
- Check that you have an internet connection
- Force-quit the app and reopen it

Technical Issues
The app is crashing or freezing. What should I do?
Try these steps in order:
- Force-quit the app and reopen it
- Restart your device
- Check for an app update in the App Store or Google Play
- Uninstall and reinstall the app (your data is saved to the cloud — it will restore when you sign back in)
Still crashing? Email support@nightstandapp.com with your device model, OS version, and what you were doing when it crashed.
Book covers aren't loading.
Cover images load from the internet. Check that you have a stable connection. If covers are consistently missing for a specific book, you can upload a custom cover: open the book → tap the cover image → choose a photo from your camera roll.
I can't find a book I'm looking for.
Nightstand searches Google Books and Open Library. If a book isn't showing up, try:
- Search by ISBN (scan the barcode on the back of the book)
- Try the full title without subtitle
- Search by author name only
If the book truly isn't in either database (rare for older or self-published titles), you can add it manually: tap Add manually at the bottom of search results and fill in the details yourself.
The session timer stopped while I was reading.
Make sure you haven't disabled background app activity for Nightstand on your device. The timer runs as a background service, but some aggressive battery-saving modes can stop it.
iPhone: Settings → Nightstand → Background App Refresh → On
Android: Settings → Apps → Nightstand → Battery → Allow background activity
You can always manually edit a session's time if the timer was cut short.
